Broccolini was first created in Japan the 1990’s as a result of meticulous cross pollination between broccoli and kai lan, Chinese broccoli. It was smaller, milder, and more tender than traditional broccoli. It has since made its way into the cuisine of other countries including the United States. Packed with nutrients, vital minerals, and plenty of dietary fiber, broccolini cooks quickly and lends itself well to Asian flavors.
Rather than being overpowered by additional sugar, here is a recipe where fresh orange juice contributes to the natural sweetness of the dish. The toasted sesame oil provides a flourishing depth and slight smokiness to the dish. It’s wonderful just on its own or with plain white rice or noodles.
